The BEFORE PHOTO submitted for eDESIGN
My client Dhanusha didn’t feel like her and her family were utilizing the dining room to it fullest potential, plus it didn’t make her happy walking into the room. We needed to change that! I asked her to give me her wish for this room. What would make her and her family happy? She said: seeing art on the walls, having photos of her family without it looking cluttered, and a new furniture placement where the dining table wouldn’t take up so much space and (if possible) an area where friends and family could relax after dinner (have tea!!). And cozy. And elegant. And vibrant with fun colors. Hmmm, could it be done (especially with the huge dining table)? You betcha!
The keep list wish: their dining table, and an abstract art
I designed for them a furniture placement layout that didn’t place the dining table in the center of the room. I placed it close to 1 wall which still left an easy entrance access to their kitchen, this then left room to create a tea / relaxing area by their fireplace. I also added extra seating by their massively gorgeous wide windows, added a photo gallery wall by her dining area, and added a slim console table near her kitchen entrance where they can add items they may need for meals (vs having to keep going back and forth to the kitchen).
FURNITURE PLACEMENT LAYOUT
I removed their current rectangular area rug under the dining table (see the BEFORE photo) and placed a runner rug that anchored the TEA AREA by the fireplace; this gave the area more substance (plus the runner has amazingly cool vibrant colors). I balanced the visual heaviness of her huge dining table by adding new (slim and open back) dining chairs vs the heavy leather ones they have). And, wait until you see the settee that I found for them (settee is a small sofa-like seating). Hint: gorgeous! The tricky part with the settee (besides making sure it wasn’t expensive, this one was $289.99!!!) was finding one that didn’t have arms so it would be easy to slide in and out. Then came the accessories with vibrant fun colors like the metal drums by the fireplace, the chandelier, the wall decor (that was half wood and half mirror), the tall plant to bring a hint of the outdoors inside, artwork, pillows and more. Below is a peek at the items I found for them within their budget of $4500. Awesome saving in keeping their current dining table!
